Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon
Saturday June 4th 7:00am to 11:00am
The inaugural Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon will take place on Saturday June 4th in Loudoun County. The 13.1 mile course runs from Breaux Vineyards to Doukenie Winery though residential areas on county and state roads near Hillsboro and Purcellville. This sold out event benefits various local and national charity organizations providing volunteer support along the route. These organizations include Special Olympics of Loudoun County, Crohns & Colitis Foundation of America, Merlin USA, Karnos Kids and Loudoun County Road Runners. The 13.1 mile course has been approved by Loudoun County and VDOT. Over 100 volunteers, medical personnel and law enforcement officers will be working the event helping to insure all runners, spectators and motorists are safe. The race is produced by Destination Races.
Residents and businesses along and near the course route should take notice of a rolling road closure, detours and safety issues. The race starts at 7:00am at Breaux Winery and has a 3hr 30min time limit. The course is closed to through traffic in residential areas. We ask residents to please avoid using the roads on the course route during the affected times to avoid delays and to be courteous to runners who are negatively affected by vehicle exhaust. Sheriff officers will provide a lead and sag vehicle to guide runners along the route and enforce the rolling closure.
Course Route with affected times (approximate): 1. Harpers Ferry Rd (Rte. 671) from Breaux Vineyards to Charles Town Pike (Hwy 9) – Closed 6:45am to 7:30am. 2. Charles Town Pike (Hwy 9) from Harpers Ferry Rd to Cider Mill Rd. – Delays 7:05am to 7:35am. 3. Cider Mill Rd (Rte 751) to Woodgrove Rd (Rte 719) – southbound lane closed 7:00 to 8:30am. 4. Woodgrove Rd. to Alder School Rd (Rte 711) – southbound lane closed 7:10 to 9:00am. 5. Alder School Rd. to Hillsboro Rd. (690) – Closed 7:30 to 9:30am. 6. Hillsboro Rd. (690) from Alder School Rd. to Charles Town Pike (Hwy 9)- northbound lane closed 7:45 to 10:30am. 7. Charles Town Pike (Hwy 9) at Mountain Rd. (690) – Expect delays 8:00am to 10:30am. 8. Mountain Rd (690) from Charles Town Pike (9) to Doukenie Winery – southbound lane closed 8:00 to 10:45am. Please avoid using road until rolling closure opens.
Suggested detours during closures: From the west use Hwy 340 to Hwy 7 eastbound. From the north use Hwy 340 or Hwy 287 southbound. From the south use Hwy 340 or Hwy 287 northbound. From the east use Hwy 7 westbound or Hwy 9 westbound to 287 northbound. For access to Doukenie Winery during the race use Purcellville Rd (Rte 611) to Legard Farm Rd. to Mountain Rd. Suggested parking area to watch the race is at Woodgrove High School located at 36811 Alder School Rd. (1/4 mile from race route at mile 9). Charles Town Pike (Hwy 9) will remain open during the race but motorists will experience delays at times so we suggest using detour routes.
Make sure to obey all signs, volunteers and law enforcement officers! And please welcome and cheer on the participants as they pass through your neighborhood. They appreciate and deserve it!
